On March 28, the Hip Hop Expo celebrated 21 years of coming to Columbus, Ohio to feature the latest and greatest talent that C-Bus has to offer the world of Hip-Hop. Because this is the longest standing hip-hop event in Cap City, the various acts that take part get the greatest opportunity to help build their career in the Ohio area. This event took place at the Columbus Convention Center on High Street, and ran from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.. This event offers every aspect of the hip hop genre. Anything from breakdancers, rappers, and DJs; this event works towards keeping the hip hop culture traditional, and close to its roots.

One of ColumBuzz’s very own, Jenni, has a cousin who joined the many acts at the event to show C-Bus her DJ’ing abilities; her name is DJ Sadie (a.k.a. DJ GLDYLOCKZ). To get her overall takeaways, ColumBuzz sat down with DJ Sadie to get some perspective on how she felt about the event:

What was the Hip-Hop Expo experience like for you?

DJ Sadie

DJ Sadie: I went to a concert and the DJ at the concert inspired me from the way in which he got the crowd going, and it made me enjoy it more. It also helped me out because although I’m so short, when I perform, I’m up on stage and my height no longer hinders me from performing.

What was it like performing at the Hip Hop Expo? Was this your first year having done it?

DJ Sadie: Yes, this was my first time performing at the Hip Hop Expo. It almost felt natural as though I had been doing it for years.

What type of music do you usually like to play? What aspect of DJ’ing are you most proud of?

DJ Sadie: This is a tough question because I like all music, but when it comes to DJing, I would rather play EDM (electronic dance music), but hip hop is always a go-to. I am most proud of how far I have come in just this last year. A year ago, I knew nothing– and then I moved to Chicago to attend the Scratch DJ Academy and was mentored by other DJ’s who had 15-20 years of experience. It was a really inspiring experience that has played such a vital role in my DJ’ing capabilities.

What was the crowd like at the Hip Hop Expo? How did it feel to perform there?

DJ Sadie: It was surreal since it was my first time DJing in front of people besides my family and friends.

Hip Hop Expo 2015

Do you have any other opportunities lined up?

DJ Sadie: There are a few things in the works, but nothing is set in stone yet. I hope to mix more this spring and summer at local bars & clubs, festivals, sorority & fraternity parties and other special events.
